As per my knowledge and experience, the USP of XtremepowerUS 24″ is the 7-way multiport system that it comes with.

I give full marks to the filter for consistent performance and optimum filtration.

It goes without saying that the filter is durable and can withstand any kind of weather without getting impacted in terms of performance.

Moreover, the one-piece blow-molded tank that it comes with would help you in achieving an optimum result.

This is a unique and “value for money” offering from the brand Bestway and could be a great addition to your pool kitty in case you own an above-ground pool that is 18 feet and above.

And, the credit for easy and hassle-free installation goes to the top flange clamp design that allows 360-degree rotation.

Further, it comes with a 6-position valve which gives you easy control and access over the filter.

The filter has a decent capacity and can pump up to 2000 gallons per hour.

Frankly speaking, if you’re using a traditional filter pump system then replacing it with Bestway Flowclear 2000gal Sand Filter would definitely reduce your operating cost because of the cost-effectiveness of the latter.

Since it uses silica instead of a filter cartridge so it is bound to be cost-effective, isn’t it?

In the long run, the operating cost of the silica-based filter is far less than its filter cartridge counterpart as the former needs to be changed once in a couple of years.

On the other hand, you’ll have to change the filter cartridge in a couple of weeks.

I recommend it for 300-14, 000 gallons above ground pools.

Best Pool Filter Sand Buyer’s Guide

Irrespective of whether you’re a newbie or a seasoned professional, you must spend some time reading this comprehensive buying guide on pool sand filters to gain the necessary information about the pool filter.

My core team has put loads and loads of effort into coming up with this idiosyncratic pool filter buyer’s guide.

It goes without saying that buying a pool sand filter can become tricky at times, and you need to be thorough with the dos and don’ts.

Sand Filters Vs. Cartridge Filters

Before you opt for a particular type of filter, it is equally important that you’re well-versed in the difference between the sand filter and the cartridge filter.

Needless to say, both come with their own pros and cons and depending on your needs and budget, you can choose one of the two.

Does it make sense?

Am I clear?

In case of doubt or confusion, don’t hesitate from mailing us.

Well, a sand filter is also termed a traditional pool filter that comprises a spherical-shaped globe.

The globe contains filter sand such as silica sand inside.

Moreover, these pool sand filters are available in two different variants.

Some products come in a full filtration system which simply means the pump is included with the system while the rest only includes the filter.

Again, there is nothing fancy about the two variants, choose the one as per your set preferences.

At the same time, I also request my clientele to refrain from changing the last-hour buying decision as it might lead to a bad buy.

Rather, trust the homework that you had done in terms of online research about the product features, reading product reviews, seeking recommendations, etc.

So, you might be inquisitive about how these traditional sand filters work, right?

First and foremost, the water is pushed to flow through the sand pump.

By doing so, the specks of dirt and debris are removed.

Most of the pool sand filters are capable of tackling debris down to a 20-40 micron-sized range which is sufficient for most pools.

However, if you’ve got some specific requirements then definitely, you need to look for some specific solutions.

Moving further, when the filter is done with tackling the contaminants and floating small particles, then the water is flown back into the pool from the tank’s bottom.

I know many of you would be wondering what are the highlights and pros of the pool sand filter before making a buy, right?

To begin with, the sand filters can take off both in-ground and above-ground pools in a hassle-free way.

Furthermore, the sand filters have an easy working mechanism and thus are easy to clean and maintain.

And, finally, I’ve got the reason 🙂 why you should opt for a pool sand filter?

Yes, you guessed it, RIGHT.

It’s the AFFORDABLE price, and so even though you’re on a shoestring budget, you can easily opt for a pool sand filter.

Still, do you need a reason to buy a sand filter?

Nonetheless, it comes with its share of cons as well.

Sand filters require regular backwashing as a part of their maintenance process.

Backwashing has been blamed for lowering the pool water, and I too agree with it.

And, if we compare their filtering capacity with a cartridge filter then definitely, the latter scores high with a tangible difference.

Let’s have a quick look at the pros and cons of the cartridge filter as well.

Frankly speaking, cartridge filters have gained popularity in recent times, and there is more than one reason for it.

Most of my clients who own an above-ground pool have shown a preference for cartridge filters in the recent past, and the credit goes to the advanced technology that most cartridge filters are equipped with.

These pool filters use the cartridge membrane, which is placed inside the cartridge tank, to trap dirt and particles down to 10-15 microns-sized.

Once the aforementioned step is expedited, the clean water will return to your pool.

It wouldn’t be possible for us to discuss all the pros of the cartridge filter so let’s discuss a couple of them that really matters.

First and foremost, you wouldn’t have to expedite the backwashing as a part of the maintenance process.

In simple words, you would be able to save a tangible amount of money for water consumption in the long run.

Secondly, their performance and speed exceed the traditional pool sand filter by tangible difference.

In layman’s language, the cartridge filters are capable of filtering out twice as many specks of dirt and debris as sand filters, and the credit goes to their larger filtration area and higher filtration capacity.

On the cons side, the cartridge filters are pricey, and also, questions have been raised in the past regarding their durability.

The cartridge filter needs to be changed on a frequent basis as compared to the sand filter which needs a replacement once in a couple of years.

Lastly, the cartridge pool filter might not be the best bet for inground pools as well as huge commercial pools.

Sand Alternatives

The most common filtration medium in a sand filter is made of silica sand.

When it comes to trapping specks of dirt and debris, the pool sand filter does a good job as it is capable of trapping contaminants as small as 10-20 microns.

Well, Zeosand and fiberglass are some of the alternatives that you can choose from, and both of them are equally good at tackling dirt and debris if not MORE.

However, as per my knowledge and experience, these pool sand filter alternatives are better at cleaning the contaminants in terms of their capability to trap smaller sizes of dirt and debris.

Also, the benefit of using a Zeosand filter is that you need relatively less frequent backwashing.

But, at the same time, they are costlier than traditional sand filters.

Similarly, if you’re planning to use fiberglass, then let me tell you, the requirement of filter glass would be approximately 20 percent less than silica sand.

Furthermore, these fiberglass filters are capable of tackling dirt and debris to as low as 5 microns in size, interesting, isn’t it?

Also, believed to last longer as compared to silica.

Needless to say, you’ll have to pay a premium price for a fiberglass filter because of the idiosyncratic features that it comes with.

Sand Pool Filter Vs. Glass

To be honest, in terms of look and feel both sand and glass are almost the same, and finding a tangible difference wouldn’t be easy at all.

However, if we talk in terms of maintenance then definitely, a glass filter would score high because if you’re using glass as a filter media, then it will significantly reduce the backwashing time.

And, the reduction happens because of the difference in the build-up of particles compared to sand.

Cleaning Ability

As discussed earlier also, a sand filter can filter up to 30 microns.

On the other hand, some glass media manufacturers’ have claimed that the glass can filter down to 5 to 10 microns which is even lesser than the cartridge filter.

Price

Well, it goes without saying that sand is more affordable.

Don’t believe my words?

Let’s do some simple maths.

Sand is roughly sold for $10 and glass media for $25 – $40; both per 50lb bags.

Moreover, glass media since it is finer will only require roughly 50% of the filter capacity to be filled.

So, sand is definitely cheaper out of the two, isn’t it?

Longevity

Sand media needs to be changed out every 4-6 years depending on the water and debris load that is going through the filter.

On the other hand, glass media is far superior in terms of longevity and can last up to 10 years.

Backwashing

Sand would be needing longer backwashing to clean the specks of dirt and debris.

On the contrary, glass media will backwash quicker as the material is lighter and less dense.

Filter Size

Well, if a filter has a larger diameter, then it simply means, it comes with more square footage of filter area.

And, as a result, cleaning the adverse water would be easier and faster.

Since our point of discussion is pool sand filter, so in this context, the proverb “bigger is better” would sync well.

In layman’s language, a large filter would be easy to operate, and the performance would also be comparatively better.

But, at the same time, you should also keep in mind that a bigger filter comes with an additional cost so if you’re willing to incur additional expense then definitely, the larger version of a pool sand filter is good to go.

On the other hand, if you’re on a shoestring budget then you shouldn’t opt for a huge size sand filter as it would bring fewer benefits and more monetary burden.

Below is a table wherein I’ve mentioned filter size against the pool volume to help you make an informed buying decision.

Filter Size (Inches)Pool Volume (Gallons)
10,000 – 20,00021”24”
20,000 – 30,00024”30”
30,000 – 50,00030”36”

When it comes to buying the best pool sand filter, always opt for the one that syncs well with the size of your pool.

However, opting for a sand filter that is smaller in size might cost you more money for maintenance and replacement in the longer run.

Filter Capacity

I’m assuming that quite a few of you would be aware of the fact that each filter and pump have their design flow rates (GPM – gallons per minute).

You’ll find some products in a full-filtration system version wherein pumps are also included.

To be honest, with these pump sets and filters, you can start cleaning your pool as soon as possible.

On the other hand, there are products that come only with filters.

And, if you’re planning to buy such products then you need to be very careful with their flow requirements.

Frankly speaking, the pump needs to be rated at the same or lower GPM as the best operation filter.

What I actually mean is a little bit undersized pump is totally fine to match with a filter at a higher GPM.

On the contrary, a filter with a lower design flow rate than a pump would be a cause of concern for sure.

Well, as the pump produces water too fast will lead to ineffective filtration and also, shorten the lifespan of the filter sand so you need to make the buying decision keeping all these points in mind.

Warranty

Well, it is one of the most ignored buying parameters, and especially the newbies ignore it, I don’t know why.

To be honest, I always recommend my clientele to look for a pool sand filter that comes with at least a year’s warranty.

In simple words, the more the warranty period the better it is.

A manufacturer backing its products with a longer warranty duration simply depicts its trust and confidence in the offering.

Price

It goes without saying that price can play a crucial role when it comes to buying the best pool sand filter.

Always, opt for the sand filter that caters to your needs and falls well within your budget.

Remember, costlier isn’t always the best.

At the same time, it isn’t a bad idea to pay some extra bucks for a good brand.

Rest is your call, indeed.

How does a pool sand filter work?

For the efficient working of a pool sand filter, the prerequisite is to have a pool pump.

Both the pool pump and the filter need to work hand in hand in order to achieve an optimum result.

What actually pool pump does is, pump the water from the pool to the sand filter.

The pool water goes through the skimmer, and also through the sand filter.

Keep in mind what I’m talking about is the pool surface water.

Another way the pump brings water to the sand filter is via the pool vacuum cleaner.

If you own a skimmer pool as I do, then definitely, the skimmer system will have either a pre-filter system or a filter basket.

It will help in the collection of the larger debris.

The pre-filter collection bags are of great help when it comes to trapping bigger debris including twigs, leaves, insects, etc.

Frankly speaking, preventing the bigger debris from reaching the sand filter would definitely prolong the filter’s lifespan.

In layman’s language, always try to capture the bigger debris and dirt before sending the water to the sand filter to prevent any last-hour misadventure.

Well, once the water gets to the pool sand filter, it is pumped through the sand filter.

If you’re using a sand filter, then water would rest on top of the sand and seep down through it.

The dirt particles stick to the sand and fresh clear water comes out of the pool filter.

Well, then the water is guided back to the swimming pool, sometimes passing a pool heating system first.

Well, if you’re a newbie then the probability is very high that you might not be well aware of all the settings that a pool sand filter comes with.

As discussed earlier also, a sand filter always has a six-port valve with different settings.

Let’s discuss each one of these settings in detail.

Filter

As the name suggests, the main function of a pool sand filter is to filter debris and dirt.

Waste

In the waste setting, the pool water runs directly out of the filter bypassing the sand.

You should use this setting only when the pool is very dirty and thorough pool cleaning is required.

This setting would empty your pool.

Backwash

You can think it of as a short cleaning cycle of the sand to improve the outcome of the filtration.

At least, you should expedite the backwashing process once a week.

Moreover, the water is washed back through the sand in reverse order, removing the dirt from the filter material.

Rinse

Once you’re done with the backwashing, the next setting that you need to expedite is rinse.

All you need to do is to allow the water to run through the filter from top to bottom for at least 30 seconds while the water is being drained into the sewer system.

It ensures that all the sand is put back in place and that any remaining dirt is drained away something similar to the waste option.

Circulation

The circulation initiates the process wherein water runs from the pump directly back to the pool bypassing the pool filter.

What it actually means is, water isn’t filtered at all.

Closed

Under the “closed” setting, all the ports are closed.

Well, if your pump is still on, in that case, make sure to switch it off within a couple of seconds, the earlier the better.

The pressure builds up incredibly fast.

In fact, the “closed” setting is used mainly in the case of servicing the pump.

By doing so, the water wouldn’t be able to come back to the pump from the sand filter when you switch off the pump for a while.

Swimming Pool Filter Maintenance

Well, to be honest, a swimming pool filter needs very little maintenance.

In fact, you should clean the filter at least once a week by expediting the backwash process.

Don’t backwash for a longer duration, 3 to 5 minutes would do the trick for you.

Once done, change the setting to “rinse” to wash away the dirt.

Unlike the cartridge filter, a pool sand filter needs to be replaced after 5 years.

Definitely, 5 years is a long-time and during such a long-time the top layer of sand would be difficult to penetrate because of the accumulated matter.

As a result, the probability is very high that the sand filter would become clogged, leading to an increase of pressure inside the filter.

And, as a result, the filter’s flow rate would drastically reduce.

Most importantly, if you’ll not replace the sand by that time then it would lead to the complete breaking down of your filter.

Sand Filter Benefits

Without any second thought, I can affirm that a pool sand system is a high-quality filter system.

The thing that really I love about this type of pool system is its capability to catch both large and small dirt particles.

When I say large dirt particles, then I simply mean debris such as hair, leaves, and even insects.

Most sand filter is capable of trapping this organic debris without any hassle.

Again, the size of the debris that a pool sand filter can trap depends upon the brand and the model.

However, the real culprits are the small organic debris when it comes to polluting the pool.

Mainly, the small debris comprises algae spores and phosphates.

Unfortunately, we don’t have many options when it comes to removing minute specks of dirt and dirt that aren’t visible to the naked eye.

In fact, the best and the most affordable option that we’ve to deal with such minute particles is none other than the pool sand filter.

Best Pool Filter Sand FAQs

Well, in this section, I would be responding to the questions related to the best pool sand filters.

In case, you also have any questions then feel free to mail us.

What size pool sand filter do I need for my above-ground pool?

Definitely, an important question, indeed.

To be honest, the size of a pool sand filter for an above-ground pool depends on a variety of factors including the capacity of water that your pool can hold and also, the size of your pool.

Always, try to find pool sand filters that are at least one square foot per 10,000 gallons of pool capacity.

On the other hand, inground pool sand filters are comparatively bigger than their above-ground counterparts with the size from 3000 gallons to over 20000 gallons.

And, that makes them suitable for any above-ground pools.

When should I backwash a sand filter?

Well, if I’m not wrong then sand is a pool filter designed to trap particles in the 20-100 micron range with the sand being 20 grades.

If you’re using a sand filter very frequently then it will definitely, trap more specks of dirt, and as a result, the efficiency might get hindered somewhat.

So, in simple words, if you’re using your pool filter very frequently then you should increase the frequency of backwashing also in a similar fashion.

Another way to know the correct time of backwashing your sand filter is by keeping track of the pressure gauge.

If the pressure gauge is 8-10 PSI above the recommended starting pressure of your pool filter then definitely, there is an urgent need for backwashing.

Moreover, you should expedite the backwashing process even after heavy rain.

How long does a pool sand filter last?

Already, I’ve answered this question in the buying section.

However, if you’ve skipped the comprehensive guide section then don’t worry at all, I’m here to help you out for sure.

For the large-sized filters, sand replacement needs to be done every five years.

On the other hand, sand needs to be replaced for small filters after every two to three years.

So, a pool sand filter can last up to 10 years if maintained properly and servicing is done on a timely basis.

But, at the same time, if you’re overusing backwashing, then the probability is very high that you might have to replace the sand filter earlier.

Needless to say, there are a lot of factors that decide the lifespan of a pool sand filter including condition, brand, origin, and material.

Can my pool sand filter remove algae?
